Topic: A Little Sass With Your Romance
I’ve been feeling really sassy lately because I just finished editing a story about an angry fairy with a bad temper and a soft heart. She’s one of my favorite heroines I’ve ever written, and I just can’t seem to shake the attitude.
Draybeth, my heroine in Excuse My Fairy, has been likened to a drunken sailor, but in a cute way, which kind of makes her my idol. With only a few weeks until the release (early December), she’s on my mind a lot. I’m excited.
At the same time, I’m finishing the third book in the Shadowed Love trilogy. If you’ve read Ruined or Denied, you know that Princess Arianna is opinionated, scandalous, and always willing to test the temperament of the room.
We see Ari a lot in Ruined and Denied. Ruined, the first book in the series is about her brother, Vale. He’s new to the Shadow Shifter throne, and he’s still trying to gain the respect of his people and learn how to rule a kingdom. His heroine, Jessa, is a Healer fighting against her instinct to save others at risk to herself.
Although Jessa isn’t as outright with her temper as Draybeth and Ari, she definitely has her own brand of steel. Her sass is a little more polished, but in the end she goes head to head with a king. And wins.
The second book in the series is about Caleb, a warrior from another realm searching for the one thing that will save his people. His people lost all their women and children in a brutal invasion, and he’s struggling to make a life for his army. They’re searching realm to realm to find women who can be their destined mates.
Tabitha, the heroine in Denied, isn’t quite what Caleb had in mind. She’s much better. But still, she’s a Warrior in the Shadow Shifter kingdom fighting for her right to be the first female guard, and her desire to fight is exactly opposite from Caleb’s bone-deep need to keep her safe at all costs, to prevent the same fate of Caleb losing everything again.
All four of these women inspire me to be stronger in their own ways. I seriously wish I knew how to wield a sword, or heal someone from certain death. I wish I could lash out like Dray, to keep others at a distant for their own good, or be as strong as a princess who ignores the restrictions placed on her. But for now, I’ll just have to write about them.
What’s your favorite kind of heroine?
